Educlowns

Edu-Clowns are a theatre group connected to Blossom Trust; a non profit organisation operating since 1993 for the promotion of art, culture and human development. Blossom Trust operates in the virudhungar district of Tamil Nadu, India. The NGO's main activities are focused towards advocating womens rights, gender equality and empowerment and HIV/AIDS prevention and care; including campaigns for child health and sexual education. All of its services are achieved with the genuine participation of the community and the Edu-Clowns offer an alternative method to educate vulnerable groups.

The Edu-Clowns are known as the "red-nosed" given the actors' painted noses , which symbolise their fury on seeing certain unacceptable situations and lifestyle in society
.

Vision:

The Edu clowns aim to...

Create awareness and facilitate discussion of issues affecting vulnerable groups such as HIV/AIDS, hygiene, nutrition, basic education and rights.
Entertain a community audience through a street theatre performance using elements of clowning, folk dance and songs to address serious issues.
Provoke thought among the viewers and stimulate action for behavioural change.
Offer disadvantaged adults and children the opportunity to train in theatre and attend workshops, to debate, explore social issues and build confidence.
Bank links for self employment units and Government welfare Schemes.
Conduct regular workshops to facilitate playfulness which revitalizes inner energies and extends self perception
Help adults, young people and children become aware of their own power as an actor

Target TB HIV/AIDS

In the past the Edu Clowns have created performances on a wide range of topics, including woman empowerment, dowry issues, nutrition, sexual health and childrens rights. Currently they are working with Blossom Trust to raise awareness and to educate about HIV/AIDS  and TB in communities throughout the Virudhunagar district. Research shows that HIV/AIDS and TB are burning issues in India today, they are clouded in fear and ignorance and the infected live with constant fear and discrimination. Furthermore this means that the disease spreads more quicly because people are unaware of how to protect themselves from it. Cultural and religious taboos prevent discussion of topics in the sexual arena and so the cycle continues.
